There is on the one hand something intensively urban in Shelter, its sheer dimension, self-illumination and billboard-like quality evokes the public sphere. On the other there is an intimacy, idiosyncrasy and uncanny quality to the image. The collage brings together a theatrical set – an amateur set of domestic bliss a scene sitting on top of a creature on all fours. The title, “Shelter” has an equally dual and slippery quality: a shelter being on the one hand a space of comfort, safety and holding, on the other a space which suggests the need to be sheltered, a space which is required because of the very absence of the stable sense of home.
