  • We are not who you think we are 1–5
Performance, Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, 2008. In 1976, Swedish artist Kjartan Slettemark dressed up in a poodle costume at an opening at Malmö Konsthall. During his performance, Slettermark turned the situation of the private view, with its complex code of propriety and influence, into a spectacle of dependency and submission. Taking on the role of the lapdog, he continued a long-standing questioning of bourgeoisie culture, hierarchies of value and influence – strands which have continued in the artist’s practice. A remake of the performance, with a newly conceived costume, was made for Lapdogs of the Bourgeoisie more than thirty years later.
